Decluttering with an expert

Here, Shelina Johkiya, founder of Dubai-based Decluttr Me, sheds light on the power of decluttering and offers key pieces of advice for those seeking a clear space.

  • Peak times

“I find that many clients like to declutter in their kitchen before Ramadan as they are getting prepared to start cooking for their families and loved ones during that time. Whilst preparing, they notice that they have a lot of expired food, broken saucepans and crockery or serving dishes that they don’t use anymore,” she told Arab News.
Other times include Christmas and New Year where people are usually off from work, and during August, when many people move homes before the beginning of the new academic year.

  • Her motto

The British expat and former lawyer’s motto is simple: When something in a cupboard or wardrobe can’t be found in less than five seconds, decluttering is necessary.
In her own home, she keeps a bag in the closet to be filled with clothes, shoes and accessories that are not used. When filled, the bag is donated.

  • Reasons behind clutter

In some cases, people cope with grief, depression and anxiety “through excessive shopping without necessarily using the purchased items. This behavior results in a build up of possessions that hinder the proper use of their living space,” Johkiya said.

However, “witnessing the transformation is incredibly rewarding. It's a joy to see the weight lifted off their shoulders and the genuine smiles when they finally let go of their belongings, reclaiming their homes in the process,” she added.

  • What goes first?

Start with the area that is causing you the most pain at the time. So, if you wake up in the morning and see the mess in your bedroom and closet, then start there. If you get angry and frustrated every time you want to cook in your cluttered kitchen, then start there,” she explained.

  • Tips on shopping

“My rule when shopping for anything is buy one, get rid of two … preferably in the same category — i.e. if you buy one dress, get rid of two old dresses.”

  • Storage tips

“Winter clothes are needed for a few short months or even weeks if you go somewhere cold. Store all winter items in boxes or on high up shelves. Cashmere and delicate items should be packaged in wax free paper and stored in a box.”
